Beneath Ben Rinnes at Ballindalloch, Glenfarclas was licensed in 1836 and bought in 1865 by John Grant for £511 19s; his descendants still own and run it, one of Scotland's last truly independent family distilleries. Its six stills, the largest on Speyside, are fired directly by gas, and long years in sherry butts give a rich, dried-fruit, Christmas-cake depth. Still the Grants', five generations on.
