Methodology

Each SMWS code is mapped to a distillery and region. Here is how that mapping is built and maintained, so you can judge how much to trust it.

Sources

The starting point is the long-running community list at whiskysaga.com/smws-codes, cross-checked against Society bottlings, Whiskybase entries and member knowledge. The Society itself does not publish these mappings.

Confidence and limitations

Most codes are well established and widely agreed. Some are disputed or apply to distilleries that are closed, mothballed or renamed, and a few numbers have never been publicly confirmed. Where a code is uncertain, treat it as indicative, not definitive.

Updates

The current Outturn is refreshed each month from the SMWS site; the code list is updated as new distilleries are added or corrections come in.

Corrections policy

Errors are fixed openly. Please report a correction with a source where you can; changes are tracked in public version control.

Reuse

The mapping is published as open data under CC BY 4.0 so anyone can reuse it with attribution.
