On Islay's north-east shore, facing Jura across the Sound, Bunnahabhain has distilled since 1881; the village was built to house its workers, and until a road arrived in 1960 everything came and went by sea. On an island famed for smoke, its classic spirit is the gentle exception, made from unpeated malt: nutty, salty-sweet and at ease in sherry wood. The name means 'mouth of the river'. Distell's, now Heineken's.
