About Isle of Arran
At Lochranza, in the mountainous north of Arran, Harold Currie, a former managing director in the Scotch industry, set out in 1995 to bring legal distilling back to an island once thick with it. The Isle of Arran distillery he built has stayed proudly independent ever since. Golden eagles wheel over the stills and the water comes off the hills above. The malt is clean, fruity and approachable, an island whisky without heavy peat. Demand outgrew the site, and in 2019 a second distillery, Lagg, opened in the south to make the peated style, but Lochranza remains the warm, fruity heart of Arran.
