In Nantou County, at the heart of Taiwan, the state-owned Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation opened a winery and distillery in 1977, turning to malt whisky in 2008. Its single malt, Omar, Gaelic for amber, is double-distilled from English barley, and because the site is also a fruit winery, freshly emptied lychee and plum wine casks can go straight to whisky. Subtropical heat does the rest. TTL's.
