In Tarbert, where the ferries come in, the Isle of Harris Distillery was the first legal distillery ever built on the island, opening in 2015 with Italian-made stills and a mission to bring work to a fragile community. Its gin, scented with local sugar kelp, came first; its single malt, The Hearach, named for the islanders, followed in 2023. The spirit is gently peated and maritime. Independently owned.
