On an island of one road, one pub and some five thousand red deer, Jura's distillery was founded by the laird, Archibald Campbell, in 1810, fell into ruin and was rebuilt in the 1960s to revive the island's economy. William Delmé-Evans gave it unusually tall stills, which lift a light, honeyed, gently oily spirit, sometimes peated. George Orwell called the place extremely unget-at-able. Whyte & Mackay's.
