On the River Teith, eight miles from Stirling, Deanston was a cotton mill built in 1785 to a design by Richard Arkwright, and only became a distillery in 1966. The river that once turned Europe's largest water wheel now drives a hydro plant that makes it self-sufficient in power, and the spirit matures in the vaulted, soil-roofed weaving shed of 1834. Light, honeyed and gently waxy. Distell's, now Heineken's.
