In a hidden glen above the River Livet, George Smith lit the first legally licensed still in the parish in 1824, a bold act in smuggling country. The whisky he made proved so good, and so widely copied, that it fought in court for the right to be The Glenlivet. It flows smooth and orchard-sweet still, all ripe pear and honey, one of the best-loved single malts on earth and the wellspring from which Speyside's fame first poured. Kept today by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard).
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottles single casks under numeric codes rather than distillery names, so a label reading 2.403 means cask 403 from distillery 2. That distillery is Glenlivet, in Speyside. More on Glenlivet at Wikipedia.
