Outside Elgin, Glenlossie has made whisky since 1876 in near-anonymity, and that is rather the point. This is a blender's malt, long valued by Diageo for a spirit of unusual lightness and grassy, clean elegance, coaxed out by purifier pipes on its stills that send the heavier vapours back for another pass. Rarely bottled under its own name, it shares its quiet Speyside site with Mannochmore and asks to be sought out. Meet it as a single cask and you find a delicate, floral, faintly waxy whisky that has spent its life making other names taste better.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottles single casks under numeric codes rather than distillery names, so a label reading 46.403 means cask 403 from distillery 46. That distillery is Glenlossie, in Speyside. More on Glenlossie at Wikipedia.
