In the whisky town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside, Glen Spey has worked since the later 19th century as one of the great unsung engines of blending. Owned by Diageo, it was long tied to the gin and blending house Justerini & Brooks, and its light, grassy, green-apple spirit, kept delicate by purifiers on the stills, has flowed quietly into J&B for generations. It is seldom seen alone. That rarity is the reward here: a single cask of Glen Spey is a chance to meet, unblended and undisguised, a Speysider that has spent its life in the service of other names.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottles single casks under numeric codes rather than distillery names, so a label reading 80.403 means cask 403 from distillery 80. That distillery is Glen Spey, in Speyside. More on Glen Spey at Wikipedia.
